Just select a new PCL5 printer that meets your speed and paper handling requirements. udk2pcl converts the UDK/XES print streams to PCL5 commands. The same forms that are currently in production can be used. udk2pcl will support special Xerox applications including RPMF and XPAF and mainframe plotting packages such as Telegraf.

XES is a good printing language. The substitute escape character (User Defined Key) command structure was designed to be transmitted using host based networks. XES is not as hard to understand as PCL nor as verbose as PostScript so a minimum of extra data is transmitted to the printer. Its command syntax is very powerful. Inexpensive PC based WYSIWYG forms design software is available to develop forms easily.

Printers can do DOUBLE duty

Printers will be able to print XES/UDK jobs from the mainframe AND they can print jobs from other sources using PCL or PostScript by taking advantage of the input port switching available on most printers.

Alternatively, an automatic 1 meg buffered printer switch will route up to three additional inputs to the printer's parallel port.

Greater Reliability

New printers are more reliable. Most of the key parts of the printer are replaced when routine consumables are replaced by the user in just a few minutes.

Your Fonts Will Be The Same

The XES language relies on the font parameters to properly process its commands. Print jobs will look the same because your fonts are translated "dot for dot" to match the original.

Full ISO font support is provided in the same manner as the Xerox printers implemented it. Foreign languages are fully supported.

You do not need to recreate any special logo or signature fonts.

udk2pcl converts and stores the original Xerox fonts "on the fly" in production or using a separate program provided. Fonts can be in ASCII or EBCDIC format. Your fonts can be extracted from 3700 backup disks or 4045 cartridges.

All default settings are set up in a file that the user can change using any PC editor. Thus the initialization file, fonts and forms can be backed up and copied onto new versions of the software for quick and easy distribution of customized configurations.

Several Input Connectivity Options

Print files can be either EBCDIC or ASCII. udk2pcl can receive input by several different methods:

Parallel

This special Centronics input board accepts input in the same manner as a printer. Any protocol converter that converts to Centronics parallel can be attached to this interface as a source of printer input.

A common approach is to use an external Print Server box to receive jobs via TCP/IP and output them via a parallel cable to the udk2pcl Print Converter.

3270 Coax

This coax card can be installed to eliminate an additional external protocol converter. Both LU1 and LU3 modes are supported.

3777 SDLC RJE

This is an additional unit that handles all the SDLC RJE processing and spools each print job so that there is no delay in receiving the data.

3780 Bisync RJE

This is an additional unit that handles all the Bisync RJE processing and spools each print job so that there is no delay in receiving the data.

Serial

udk2pcl can support up to 19.2 KB RS232 using XON/XOFF.

Output Print Options

  1. Direct connect LPT1 from the udk2pcl Print Converter to the Centronics Parallel Input port of the printer. This is the most common connection used.
  2. Redirect LPT1 to any LAN printer. The user may install a LAN card and software into a udk2pcl Print Converter with a hard drive. Then the PCL5 output that normally prints from LPT1 is redirected to a printer on the LAN. This approach has been used to save the cost of moving a 3270 coax line to the new printer.

Many printers can be supported from ONE LAN workstation

udkServe, a special version of udk2pcl, when installed on a user workstation on a LAN, can support a large number of printers without requiring a udk2pcl Print Converter for each printer. Because it's the same software, it uses the same resources as the udk2pcl Print Converters. This approach is LAN independent. A 486/66 workstation running DOS 6.22 can convert print jobs at up to 300 ppm.

The software license is for the throughput you desire. This approach gives you the flexibility to print some jobs everywhere and large print jobs on high speed printers without tying up the LAN.

udk2pcl offers you ONE CONSISTENT solution to your XES/UDK conversion requirements--both Plug 'N Play and LAN based.

The smaller PCL page size is supported.

udk2pcl offers shift and squeeze commands to position print jobs inside the HP workspace (8" x 10.5"). The squeeze function enables most print jobs to fit in a smaller print area without having to change the original application programs. Squeeze can be done in one or both directions.

Two-up printing is available.

Special fonts and margin commands are available to print two logical landscape pages on a portrait page -- one on top of the other. This is an effective method to reduce the size of mandatory reports that are stored in archives or distributed.

Extended XES Features

udk2pcl supports XES/UDK commands such as head-to-head duplex and head-to-toe duplex. You can save paper and save shipping costs if reports are distributed.

udk2pcl software is mature

Some modules of the udk2pcl Print Conversion software have been under development since the XES/UDK printers were first shipped. Hundreds of companies have used the font handling modules for many years.

udk2pcl processes the XES/UDK commands that are in common everyday use. Our extensive experience and testing also enables udk2pcl to handle many of the undocumented features that exist in the XES software.

udk2pcl converts XES /UDK commands to print the same way as your Xerox printer. NOT the way the manual claims it should.

This experience has enabled us to build an extensive test suite of real world XES applications that we use to test udk2pcl upgrades. Our philosophy is to release new version to you only when you need it. This growing data base of XES test cases helps us to make sure that each udk2pcl upgrade continues to work with your applications.

16. Support is Built In

In the event an application does not print correctly, a Capture capability is provided, to save the actual print job that is not printing correctly. This Captured file can be sent to us either by e-mail or uploaded to our Electronic Bulletin Board for us to analyze. Rather than a HEX dump, the actual file lets us test any updates to the software BEFORE we send it back to you. The Capture software is an important tool to give you responsive support.
